Wireless or WLAN technology is of the few technologies that developed from the home office to corporate environments. Usually this works the other way around: techniques are developed for use within corporate environments and are occasionally used in consumer or home offices.
Previous generations of WLAN solutions consisted of mere Access Points attached to an ADSL-router. Security was not much of an issue at that time. When Access Points were connected to corporate networks, suddenly entire networks were possible targets for untrustworthy users.
Present generations of WLAN devices therefore support techniques arranging secure accessibility, using e.g. central control of the WLAN (wireless controller) and support of encryption and authentification standards such as WPA-PSK and IPsec.
