What defines Server Virtualization?
Server virtualization allows you to 'consolidate' several - often Microsoft Windows-type - servers. By merging them within one actual platform,a highly enriched environment with many advantages materializes.
In order to be able to consolidate these servers, an 'intermediate' layer is needed in between the hardware and the operation system. VMware offers such functionality.
Why use virtualization?
Availability is becoming a key issue within a growing number of organizations. Downtime and delays are not acceptable anymore. The traditional 'one workload, one box' approach to server provisioning inevitably leads to over-provisioning and underutilization of hardware assets. Most servers operate at only about 5-15% of their total load capacity.
Virtualizing allows you to upgrade availability by evenly distributing the load over several physical machines. This feature becomes available because servers no longer physically run on one piece of hardware. Applying virtualization, you may 'move' a running virtual server from one physical server to another with no impact to end users. VMware calls this 'V-motion'.
