What defines de-duplication?
De-duplication is a means to clear stored data from multiple identical versions, thus diminishing the volume of data to be stored.
How is that a problem?
Company's implementing centralized storage will quickly find themselves flooded with extensive loads of data when de-duplication is not applied. E.g. when someone e-mails attachments - such as PDF, Word documents or Powerpoint presentations - all recipients will file the e-mail and possibly even the separate attachments as well. Multiple duplicates of the e-mail and attachments will be taking up precious storage space.
The solution
This issue will be solved when you use de-duplication. The de-duplication process will detect and remove all duplicates and will archive each identical file only once. To each individual user, the file will appear unchanged at the location it was filed to. No noticeable changes will be apparent to the user.
De-duplication may be run on primary storage, but also during replication or backing up of data to a secondary storage system, VTL or tape library.
Qi ict offers various solutions for de-duplication of data. Also, we can help you apply this method through a WAN connection. In most cases, performance will be improved enormously.
