Blue Coat offers appliances focusing on solutions such as URL filtering, proxy server and wan optimization.

Within a solid security concept, a proxy server is indispensible. This proxy server makes certain users from your network cannot directly connect to other hosts on the Internet. All traffic is being checked through the proxy server. Blue Coat Systems has thought up Secure Proxy, a system adding extra security by means of content security.

By letting all users communicate with the Internet through a Blue Coat proxy, it can be established accurately who is allowed to go where, when and how. Using extensive policies, users or user groups can securely use the Internet while the risks of viruses and productivity loss are greatly diminished.

By adding a Blue Coat Webfilter, it can even be programmed very selectively - based on categories - which websites may be visited.

Using the included Blue Coat Reporter, all Internet activities of employees can be registered in clear reports. This functionality alone has prompted several municipal and governmental organizations to switch to Blue Coat. Scalability is very flexible, e.g. at the Municipality of Groningen thousands of users work via Blue Coat systems.

The most recent addition to the Blue Coat system is WAN optimization functionality. Using this technology, traffic between locations can be speeded up and optimized using techniques such as byte caching, object caching, TCP optimization and pre-fetching.
